The organisations responsible for cancer treatment in FICAN South region–Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS), Wellbeing services county of Päijät-Häme (PäijätHA), Wellbeing services county of Kymenlaakso (Kymenhva), and Wellbeing services county of South Karelia (EKhva)–aim to offer their patients the best possible, continuously developing, and individually planned care.
FICAN South is part of HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center and cooperates with every cancer treating unit. HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center’s expertise in cancer has been evaluated to be among the best in Europe. The Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) has accredited HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center with the Comprehensive Cancer Center status.

Patients are entitled to counselling, and social and psychosocial help and support. To hear out the patients’ wishes and to improve the Center’s activities, HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center has a patient advisory board.
Places of care in FICAN South region
There are several places providing cancer treatment in the FICAN South region and the selected place of care depends on the type and stage of the cancer in question. The most important treatment methods are surgery, radiation, and various medications, which are administered individually to each patient. HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center operates in Department of Oncology, Women’s Hospital and Meilahti Triangle Hospital. Cancer surgery is performed in several surgery units of various specialities. The most demanding abdominal surgeries take place in HUS Abdominal Center. In the HUS region, urological patients are examined and treated inHUS Abdominal Center’s units, Peijas Hospital and Meilahti Tower Hospital, as well as Hyvinkää, Raasepori, Lohja and Porvoo hospitals. Treatment of gynecological cancers is centralized to Women’s Hospital in the HUS region. Neurosurgery is centralized to the Department of Neurosurgery in Töölö Hospital. Töölö Hospital also houses The Department of Musculoskeletal and Plastic Surgery, which performs corrective cancer surgery. Children’s cancers are treated in New Children’s Hospital. HUS Eye and Ear Hospital has an Eye Tumour Outpatient Clinic and an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Ward, which treats oral tumors, among others.
Skin and Allergy Hospital treats superficial skin tumors.
